Solo instrument & chamber music

Age limit

27 (note: A maximum of 10% of an ensemble may be between 28 and 35)

Who can participate

Amateurs, musicians from private and state schools, professionals

The Competition includes

  • 1 performance in front of jury (19th July)
  • If chosen by the jury: Performance in the Charity Gala Award Concert on the 20th of July in the MuTh Theater

Instruments

  • Piano
  • Strings (Violin - Viola - Cello - Double Bass)
  • Woodwinds; Brass (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Trumpet, French Horn,Trombone, Saxophone)
  • Chamber Music (2-10 musicians)

Age category and performing time

A    up to 8                               5-7 minutes

B     9 to 12  years                   7-10 minutes

C    13 to 15 years                    8-12 minutes

D    16 to 18 years                   12-15 minutes

E    19 to 27 years                    15-20 minutes

Repertoire

2 original pieces (or 1 original piece and 1 arrangement) from different musical periods e.g. one baroque piece and one contemporary; or one classical and one romantic.

  • The repertoire presented must be within the grasp of the player, with respect to both technical and musical aspects of the piece.
  • It is recommended to choose from the rich repertoire of baroque, early classical, classical, romantic, and contemporary periods.

Application Fee

Solo: – 90 Euro
Duos: – 90 Euro/performer
Trios or larger ensembles: – 45 Euro/performer

Orchestra & Bands

Age limit: 27

Note: A maximum of 10% of an ensemble may be between 28 and 35

Conductors are NOT subject to the age limit.

Who can participate

All non-professional orchestras are welcome to compete in this event. With the exception of the conductors, all orchestra members must be amateurs. 

The competition includes

  • 1 performance in front of the jury
  • 2 workshops à 45 min. with experts for musical enrichment (16th and 18th of July): Please prepare one piece.
  • If chosen by the jury: Concert in the Charity Gala Award Concert on the 20th of July in the MuTh Theater Vienna 

Age Groups

  • Children’s Orchestra: 8-12
  • Teenager’s Orchestra: 13-17
  • Youth’s/Adult’s Orchestra: 18+

Repertoire Category A: Symphonic bands, fanfares, brass bands

  • A piece composed by a foreign composer (different nationality than one’s own)
  • A piece composed after 1970 by a composer from your country of origin(a résumé of the composer’s piece must be submitted as proof)

The pieces must be performed in their original form (no arrangements). The widest possible stylistic diversity is welcomed. Pieces for solo-instruments with an orchestral accompaniment are not allowed.

Duration: 18 - 20 minutes, minimum of two pieces.

Repertoire Category B: Chamber Orchestras, String orchestras and Symphony Orchestras

  • A piece composed by a foreign composer
  • A piece composed for the size of the ensemble
  • Stylistic diversity
  • Periodic diversity with at least one piece dated after 1970
  • If possible: A piece composed by a composer from your country of origin(a résumé of the composer must be submitted as proof)

Pieces for solo-instruments with an orchestral accompaniment are not allowed.

Duration: 18 - 20 minutes, minimum of two pieces.

Choir

Age limit: 27

Note: A maximum of 10% of an ensemble may be between 28 and 35

Conductors and accompanying musicians are NOT subject to the age limit.

Who can participate

All non-professional choirs are welcome to compete in this event (apart from conductor and accompanying musician). Choirs should be made up from 8 to 50 singers.

The Competition includes

  • 1 performance in front of the jury
  • 2 workshops à 45 min. with experts for musical enrichment (16th and 18th of July): Please prepare one piece. 
  • If chosen by the jury: Concert in the Charity Gala Award Concert on the 20th of July 2019 in the MuTh Vienna

Repertoire A1:  Children's choir (boys and girls up to the age of 12)

 2 pieces that meet following criteria:

  • One piece by a composer born before 1950 OR one piece by a composer who is alive at the time of registration
  • One freely chosen piece

Singing time maximum 15 minutes

A2:     Youth’s choir (boys and girls up to the age of 18)

 2 pieces that meet following criteria:

  • One piece by a composer born before 1950 OR one piece by a composer who is alive at the time of registration
  • One freely chosen piece

Singing time maximum 15 minutes

Repertoire for the category B, C, and D (men's choir, women's choir and mixed choir)

2 pieces that meet following criteria:

  • One freely selected work by an Austrian composer OR one piece by a composer born before 1950 OR one piece by a composer who is alive at the time of registration
  • One freely chosen piece

Singing time maximum 20 minutes

  • Please send a video link of one performance. It does not have to match the piece you choose for the competition.
